Major

[vc_row inner_container=”true” padding_top=”0px” padding_bottom=”0px” border=”none”][vc_column][text_output]I took my godson back-to-school shopping yesterday. I have never seen an 8-year old so hype to throw school supplies into a cart. He’s into black and orange and anything with a character on it “is for kids” according to him, so it was quite an interesting cart. Aside from getting the 3rd grade essentials, I needed to get three trunk party gifts. It’s hard to believe that little ones I used to teach are leaving for college in a few weeks. Seeing dorm room essentials reminded me of a college and slogan I’d seen earlier.

In April, my cousin had a basketball tournament at a college and the slogan seen all around the campus was, ‘Major in Making a Difference’. I loved it and I thought it was worth repeating.

“What’s your major?” is a question a college student will be asked a lot. No matter what the answer is, and even if you’re undecided, I think the best gift you can give yourself and your life is to spend the MAJORity of your time doing work and creating things that matter and that make a difference. Two of the many things you learn about yourself during college is who you are and what really matters to you. Peer pressures become less significant, the voices and choices of your parents come second to your newly found voice, and in the midst of independence and maturity, you find the work, the people, the things that make you feel alive and that positively impact others.

Whether college days are over for you or never began or if you are preparing for a new year of high school or a new week of work, major in making a difference. Spend the majority of your time creating art, doing work, being of service, and meeting your goals. When you do, we all win.[/text_output][/vc_column][/vc_row]
